Course Description:

Everybody is surfin', surfin' Tofino! Imagine spending a fun-filled long weekend at MacKenzie Beach Resort in Tofino, BC. You'll stay in a deluxe beach-front cabin, surfing to your heart's delight during the day, enjoying home-cooked meals, and spending the evenings relaxing by the fire, watching surf videos, or working on your kayak roll in a heated indoor pool. By spending three consecutive days in the surf, your kayak surfing skills will take a quantum leap. The expert guidance of Dan Lewis and Bonny Glambeck will speed your learning curve and provide a wide safety net. You will have the opportunity to try out whitewater playboats as well as surfing in sea kayaks. Oh, and don't forget easing into the private hot-tub to relax après-surf.

Course Goal:

The goal of this course is to allow intermediate paddlers to finesse their edging, leaning, bracing, and kayak surfing skills, and to introduce or finesse the kayak roll. The 3-day format allows plenty of time for one-on-one coaching, to bring your kayak surfing skills to a new level.

Course Objectives:

  • Learn intermediate kayak strokes including leaning, quick turning, and high and low braces.
  • Learn kayak surfing skills including side-surfing, launching and landing.
  • Scoping surf zones to avoid hazards.
  • Learn to read surf waves, to find and surf in the power pocket.
  • Surf zone etiquette.
  • Learn a philosophy of safety that emphasizes seamanship, judgement, and personal responsibility.

Itinerary:

We'll spend the first morning reviewing basic surf zone skills such as side-surfing, punching out, and sneaking back in. The rest of the weekend is spent playing in the surf at local beaches. Optional pool sessions each evening will allow you to work on kayak rolling skills.

"I had a wonderful, amazing time on the course. You taught and I learned all the things listed in the course outline. But what meant the most to me was observing how to have fun, to make every paddle challenging no matter what the conditions. Master the essentials and then feel free to play and push the edges a little."
